Jeff Duntemanns Wi-Fi Guide
Book Review by Gerhard R. FischerThe great interest in the networking of computer systems that existed for several years now has continued unabatedly and the present book--just published in its second, updated edition--provides an excellent guide for people interested in learning about networking.
The 498 page volume is organized in 20 chapters and several appendices. It is well written throughout, and the text is supported by very clear and understandable figures and tips. The book addresses newer as well as more experienced PC users who want to set up a network. The extensive subject matter ranges from a general introduction into the "why" of networking to the practical aspects of designing and installing a home or small business network. The chapters on the required hardware cover many of the needed networking cards, cables, antennas, and connectors. The various privacy and security considerations of the completed network are covered in much detail.
Also covered and interesting to read are the chapters on Wi-Fi warriors on the road, i.e., business travelers and the like and their use of commercially available and/or free hotspots in airports, hotels, or cafes and other places.
A few chapters are devoted to the hobby of wardriving, the needed equipment and software, and the possible legal ramifications of not just locating but also tying into local hotspots. The whole area is legally still wide open, but caution is advised to make a distinction between allowed and intrusive use (theft!) of available broadband signals that are paid for by others.
It was a delight to review this well written book and I can only highly recommend it for everyone who is contemplating to network the computers in his/her home or office and wants to gain a little more than just basic knowledge before starting.
