Windows XP Professional - The Ultimate User's Guide
Book Review by Gerhard R. Fischer

The current volume of over 700 pages was just published in it's second, updated edition and is, as the author states in his introduction, addressed to the beginning, the intermediate, and the advanced computer user. A look at the Table of Contents gives a good first overview of the wealth of information presented by the author.

Among others, the sixteen chapters of the book cover topics ranging from Getting Started and Personalizing Your Computer to Setting Up of Users and Groups, Internet and Email, Corporate Networks, Mobile Computing and, finally, Troubleshooting and Tweaking Windows XP.

The first two chapters offer a good, general learning text for the novice, while the following chapters become more detailed. The text is interspersed with many relevant figures, as well as additional notes and tips elaborating on the subject on hand. Topics in those latter chapters include, but are not limited to, the scheduling of tasks, the utilization of various system resources, installing and removing of software and hardware, networking and security, and disk and computer management.

I find that the book is well and understandably written throughout and can truly recommend it for any computer user who desires a better understanding of the workings of Windows XP and wishes to aquire the skills to keep his or her machine performing at it's best.
