Windows Server 2003
In A Nutshell
A Desktop Quick Reference

Review By: Diana F. Arsenault

Yes, it’s very true that I’m a die hard Linux fan but with all the hoopla about the Microsoft Windows Server 2003; I was curious. Curious to see; if they had made enough major improvements to spark my interest further. Let’s just chalk it up to the Geek that lives within.

The book begins with a section to help previous Microsoft Server Administrators through the transition into administering the new Windows Server 2003. There are tables that show the way you did it in the old server and how the same things are done with the new server.

Then the book does an excellent job of showing you what’s new and explaining how it should be used.

Windows Server 2003 is a more scalable platform than the Windows 2k Server, it’s also more manageable and secure.

The book states that you must activate the Windows Server 2003 software whether you want to or not. If you’re going to use it, you must activate it. Whether activation is a plus or a minus is debatable, but it’s a fact of life from now on with Microsoft products.

Windows Server 2003 has a new “Manage Your Server” tool. Using this tool you can turn your machine into a file server, print server, web server, DHCP server or a domain controller. This tool is useful for the initial setup of the machine.

If you’re really serious about managing your Windows Server 2003 you should install the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack using the Windows Installer. This installs a full slate of tools for managing any Windows Server 2003 machine including domain controllers and by installing this pack on a Windows XP Professional machine, you can then use this machine as your main administrator workstation for managing the Windows 2003 Servers anywhere on your network.

This is an extremely well written book on the Windows Server 2003. A must have Desktop Reference for every Windows Server 2003 Administrator.
