Software Review by James M. GarnesFor those who have ever secretly thought about becoming a professional night club disc jockey (DJ), your time has now come. EZ-DJ Plus is a new browser-based software application that lets anyone mix high quality musical DJ sets from MP3s. (MP3s are sound files that have been compressed through MP3 encoding, making the files smaller and easier to send across the Internet.) EZ-DJ eliminates the cumbersome aspects of mixing, such as beat-matching and volume leveling, allowing you to focus on the fun parts, like creating cool cuts, fades, DJ tricks and effects. You're guaranteed never to just listen to your strictly digital music again!
In addition to simply mixing tracks, EZ-DJ also features the Sound-Warper, a visual interface that allows users, via their mouse, to sonically "twist" their music in exciting ways by utilizing filters, echo, phasers, and reverb. There are also illuminated buttons which enable the user to perform DJ tricks (e.g. gating, record stops, echoes, beat-juggling fills), as well as trigger samples of break beats, kick drums and high hats over the mix. A cross-fader rounds out the program’s real-time controls, allowing users to do classic fades and cuts. In addition, users can save their mixes and share them with friends and fans through email.
Here’s how it works. Once the software has been downloaded and installed, virtual turntables will appear on the screen of your monitor. Choose from included music or select your own MP3s and then step up to the turntables and start mixing. With EZ-DJ Plus, anyone can DJ with any of the fresh tracks included for free, or with your own music. Scratch MP3s by dragging the turntable a bit, or use the fader to mix multiple tracks into one.EZ-DJ Plus has it all. Multiple sample buttons, transitions, drum loops and a realistic crossfader gives you the power to mix tracks any way you can imagine. As mentioned earlier, it features a unique sound warping tool. On screen visualizations can be pushed and pulled to give your tracks a space aged feel.
Once you get the hang of EZ-DJ, you’ll find it enjoyable to playback your very own musical creations both for yourself as well as sharing the music with friends through e-mail. It also features built-in CD burning capabilities, and users with portable MP3 players can easily transfer mix sessions to their device.
