DOMAIN NAME COMMANDO
Software Review by Diana F. Arsenault

Domain Names are valuable pieces of property to their owners. Surprisingly, they can be easily hijacked or stolen by hackers and thieves. Forgetting to pay the annual domain fees can cause you to lose your domain name temporarily, or worse yet, permanently if someone else registers it for themselves in the interim.
Domain Name Commando will protect your domain names and your web site(s) by regularly monitoring their whois registration records for expiration or unauthorized changes. If a domain registration changes (such as from someone transferring ownership or hacking the records to disrupt service to your web site) or nears its expiration date, Domain Name Commando will automatically alert you by email so that you can take immediate action to protect your assets.
The program allows you to enter a list of domain names. As each domain is entered, the software automatically looks up their corresponding whois registration records. You can also import a list of domain names from a standard text file using the Load button. Similarly, the corresponding Save button exports the list of domain names to a text file.
Most whois services on the web only work for .com, .net and .org, and many registrars restrict their whois functions to provide data only for domains registered with them. Domain Name Commando's Domain Monitor is like a "super" whois client since it works for virtually any domain name around the world (TLD and ccTLD domains, worldwide, including .com, .net., .org, .biz, .gov., .name, .info, .at, .au, .de, .es, .fr, .in, .uk and more)!
The Scheduling tab in the Options window lets you choose how frequently you want Domain Name Commando to poll the whois servers for your domain names. A typical scenario is to have the software monitor the domain registrations on a daily basis, sending you email messages in the event that anything changes or if the expiration dates are approaching.

Domain Name Commando can send you email messages for the following events:
- Something in the domain name registration changed.
- A domain name is about to expire (Domain Name Commando will send weekly
notices within 30 days of expiration).
- A domain name has expired.
- A domain name has transitioned from registered to unregistered status.

TIP: To check the availability of a domain name, click the Enter Domains icon in the shortcut bar, then simply type the domain name into the Domain column at the top of the window. Domain Name Commando will instantly poll the proper top-level registrar for the domain name, displaying the current registrant's information or a message indicating that the domain is not registered.
Domain Name Commando also retains copies of domain registrations records, organized by date, so that you can recall and print them for historical or evidentiary reasons. Amazingly, most domain registrars do not retain copies of previous registrations, so if someone hijacks your domain names it is up to you to provide proof of ownership. Domain Name Commando makes documenting your ownership easy.
Personally, I was very impressed with this software. Not only does it actually do what the marketing materials state but it does it with grace and style.
